When it is time to replace your heating system, most North Alabama homeowners choose between a heat pump and a gas furnace. Both work well here. The right choice depends on your home, your utilities and how you like your house to feel in winter.
How each one heats
A heat pump moves heat from the outdoor air into your home. In summer it runs in reverse and cools your home, so one outdoor unit does both jobs. A gas furnace burns natural gas or propane to make heat. It is paired with an air conditioner for summer.
Why heat pumps work well in North Alabama
Our winters are mild most of the time. On a typical January night in Huntsville, the low is right around freezing, and many winter days are well above it. Heat pumps are at their most efficient in that range. On the coldest nights, backup heat strips help keep the house warm.
- One system for heating and cooling
- No gas line needed
- Efficient for most of the winter here
Why some homeowners prefer gas heat
- The air at the vents feels warmer
- Steady heat on the coldest nights without relying on heat strips
- If the house already has gas, replacing a furnace is often simple
- Gas furnaces often last 15 to 20 years or more with good maintenance. Heat pumps often last 10 to 15 years, since they run all year.
The middle option: dual fuel
A dual fuel system pairs a heat pump with a gas furnace. The heat pump handles heating on most days, and the furnace takes over when it gets really cold. If your home already has gas, it is worth asking about.
Questions to ask before you decide
- Do you have natural gas at the house now?
- How old is your air conditioner? If it is near the end of its life too, replacing both at once may make sense.
- Are there rooms that are always too hot or too cold? That can point to duct problems a new system will not fix by itself.
- How long do you plan to stay in the home?
- How was the new system sized? It should be sized for your home, not just matched to the old unit.
