Hazel Green was settled in the early 1800s, when farmers from Georgia, Tennessee and the Carolinas came for its rich soil, and it was briefly incorporated in 1821. One story says the name comes from hazelnut bushes that turned a bright green each spring. Today farmland is giving way to new subdivisions, and Hazel Green High School serves students from here and Meridianville.
